by their intimate partners
in our country every day.

The following national statistics regarding domestic violence are taken from information compiled and distributed by the Texas Council on Family Violence and the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

In our country:

  • Family violence causes more injury to women than all other rapes, muggings, and car accidents combined.

  • An average of three women are killed by their husbands or boyfriends every day.

  • Approximately 1.5 million women are raped and/or physically assaulted by an intimate partner every year.

  • Violence by an intimate accounts for about 21% of violent crime experienced by women, and about 2% of the violence experienced by men.

  • Women are 5 to 8 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner.

  • Approximately 1 in 5 high school girls reports being physically or sexually assualted during a high school dating relationship.

  • 30% of women who experience abuse, experience it for the first time during pregnancy.
