Family Violence Statistics
National Statistics
The following national statistics regarding domestic violence are taken from information compiled and distributed by the Texas Council on Family Violence and the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
In our country:
- Family violence causes more injury to women than all other rapes, muggings, and car accidents combined.
- An average of three women are killed by their husbands or boyfriends every day.
- Approximately 1.5 million women are raped and/or physically assaulted by an intimate partner every year.
- Violence by an intimate accounts for about 21% of violent crime experienced by women, and about 2% of the violence experienced by men.
- Women are 5 to 8 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate partner.
- Approximately 1 in 5 high school girls reports being physically or sexually assualted during a high school dating relationship.
- 30% of women who experience abuse, experience it for the first time during pregnancy.
State Statistics
In our state:
- Approximately two women are killed by family violence every week.
- Over 185,000 incidents of family violence were reported in 2003.
- Over 913,000 women were battered in 2003.
- 3 out of 4 Texans have either experienced family violence or know a friend or family member who has.
- Almost half of all Texans have experienced at least one form of domestic violence.
- 73% of all Texans believe that domestic violence is a serious problem in Texas.
Noah Project
The following statistics regarding Noah Project's services are taken from the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
Last year, Noah Project:
- Provided safe shelter to 544 victims of family violence.
- Answered 1,089 hotline calls.
- Provided outreach services to 358 clients.
- Provided 69 Healing Hurting Hearts presentations to 1,388 children in schools throughout our service area.
