Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse can be very damaging. It involves any use of words, voice, action, or lack of action meant to control, hurt, or demean you. Emotional abuse can be difficult to identify, but abuse usually involves repeated words and actions. Hurting your feelings over and over, a partner who doesn't care about hurting you, and being humiliated in front of others are some examples of emotional abuse. Remember that emotional abuse can be very subtle, and it often starts as cruel jokes or teasing you.

Examples of Verbal Abuse:
Threats Accusations of unfaithfulness Name-calling Nasty text or cell messages Insinuations Calling you stupid Calling you ugly Calling you dumb Saying you can't do anything right Saying that nobody else would want you Yelling at you Insulting you Being sarcastic Sexual slurs Withholding approval or affection as a punishment Sneering Growling Criticizing Ignoring Humiliating Laughing at you Insulting your family or friends Threatening your family or friends
Emotionally Abusive Actions:
Being irresponsible Controlling your access to money Displaying intense jealousy Isolating you from family or friends Keeping you out too late Checking up on you Taking your things Making faces Manipulation and lying Threatening to break up Cheating on you Constantly questioning you Keeping you from doing things you like Denying access to phone Threatening Suicide Threatening to harm self
