Frequently Asked Questions:

What do the volunteers actually do?

During their shift, crisis hotline volunteers run the shelter. They are responsible for answering the crisis hotline: providing crisis intervention to callers in need, giving information to people who are concerned for loved ones or worried about their own situations, and making referrals to appropriate resources when required. The crisis line worker also helps meet any of our clients' immediate needs as they arise, and monitors and oversees the day-to-day operation of the shelter during the volunteer shift. What times are the volunteer shifts?

The volunteer shift is in the evening, from 6:00pm - 10:00pm on weekdays and from 5:00pm - 10:00pm on weekends. Volunteers can choose to work any open shift that fits their schedules, and can work as many shifts as they want.

Does Noah consider the time spent in training to be volunteer hours?

Yes. It is very important that our volunteers are well trained and confident, so we have a relatively long volunteer training program. In addition to the four evenings of classroom training, volunteers need to complete three on-the-job training sessions with an experienced volunteer or staff member, and all of the time spent in training is credited as volunteer hours.

Are there any requirements to be a volunteer?

Anyone can volunteer, provided they are 18 years of age or older and complete our training, and we ask that hotline volunteers commit to working two shifts per month.
